Museum of Archeology

Local name: Il-Mużew tal-Arkeoloġija

Located inside: Cittadella

The Gozo Museum of Archeology is the oldest public museum on the island of Gozo, founded in 1960 within the Citadel. It presents objects from excavations that document the history of the island since prehistoric times. The most valuable objects in the collection are images of human figures from several thousand years ago, originating from the Ggantija temples and the so-called the tomb of Majmuna from the period of Arab rule, dated 1173.

The headquarters of the Gozo Museum of Archeology is a seventeenth-century tenement, once the seat of the Bondi family, which for a long time remained in a state of abandonment and devastation. In 1937, at the request of the then Governor of the Maltese Islands, Lieutenant Harry Luke, renovation work began to create the conditions for storage and display of excavated items.

After modernization in the 1980s, the exhibitions of the Gozo Museum of Archeology were divided into three parts in chronological order: prehistory, the classical period, and medieval and early modern periods.
