Basilica of St. George
Local name: Bażilika ta 'San Ġorġ
St George's Basilica is a baroque church, built in 1676 according to the design of Giovanni Battista Conti. At the time of creation it was the largest church on the island of Gozo. Because of the huge amount of gilded interior design elements, the Basilica of St. George is often called the Golden Basilica. An interesting fact is the bronze cast door with the central coat of arms of Pope John Paul II.
All stucco inside the basilica are made of marble and gold. The temple has two priceless paintings by Mattia Preti - an Italian caravaggionist, painter and creator of frescoes. The first of the paintings is placed in the main altar of St. Jerzy with the defeated dragon - the second presents the Assumption of the Mother of God (he is located in one of the side chapels).
The basilica has a total of 11 chapels in which - in addition to Preti's paintings - you can admire the works of such masters as Giuseppe Calì, Michele Busuttil, Giuseppe Fenech, Francesco V. Zahra, Fortunato Venuti, Filippo Cosimo, Giuseppe D'Arena, Salvatore Bondì, Robert Dingli or Stefano Erardi.
