City Gate

Local name: Bieb il-Belt

The Valletta City Gate was erected for the first time in 1569. Currently, the existing gate is a successor of the previous four constructions. It was created in 2011–2014 according to the controversial project by Renz Piana. The monstrous, simple in form, modern building is compared to the ancient Egyptian temple of Edfu. Its opponents point to a stylistic mismatch with Valletta's baroque and mannerist architecture.

The original, 16th-century gate was replaced in 1633 with a more ornate structure. It was demolished in 1853 because it turned out to be too narrow - in its place stood a structure decorated with statues of two Grand Masters of the Order of Saint. Jan - Philippe Villiers de L'Isle-Adam (1464–1534), the first Grand Master in Malta and Jean Parisot de Valette, the builder of Valletta. The fourth gate, in the style of Italian modernism, was put into use in 1965. Implementation was met with severe criticism.

The currently existing city gate is actually an architectural complex, which includes the ruins of the Royal Opera House adapted for the amphitheater and the new building of the Maltese Parliament.
