The Old Town of Mdina is enclosed in defensive walls erected since the Middle Ages. It is a tangle of narrow, winding streets and small squares over which the stone walls of houses rise. Even on hot days there is shade in them and the temperatures are lower than outside the walls. The most important building of the Old Town is the monumental cathedral of St. Paweł built at the end of the 17th century
Although Mdina is visited by crowds of tourists, it remains a relatively quiet place because there are almost no permanent residents here, and after departure the streets empty almost completely.Less
