St. According to tradition, St. Paul's Cathedral will stand in the place where during the lifetime of St. Paul the Apostle was the villa of the Roman governor of Malta. The first cathedral, erected at the end of the 16th century, was destroyed on January 11, 1693 by an earthquake. In its place in 1702, a building that has survived to this day was erected. From the first cathedral, a beautifully carved sacristy door, made of solid Irish Oak in 1520, and a baptismal font of white marble from 1495 have been preserved.
St. Patrick's Cathedral Paweł has two bell towers with 12 bells - the oldest was built in Venice in 1370. Each bell tower has its own clock - the chronometer on the right tower counts hours and minutes, on the left days and months. Two 17th-century cannons were set up in front of the facade - the right one, with the coat of arms of the Prince of Savoy, commemorates the defense of Rhodes in 1522.
One of the cathedral's more valuable monuments is the silver cross, which is supposedly the same crucifix that Gotfryd of Bouillon brought to Jerusalem during the first Crusade in 1099.
