Mdina Gate was built in the Baroque style, according to the design of Charles François de Mondion during the rule of the Grand Master of the Knights of Malta (the Knights of St. John), Antonio Mannoel de Vilheny. The construction of the gate was completed in 1724 as part of the reconstruction and renovation of the city. Currently, it is one of the main tourist attractions of Mdina. You can see her in the third episode of the first season of "Game of Thrones".
In the front portal of the gate, there are coats of arms of de Vilheny and the city of Mdina. From the city side, the gate is decorated with reliefs depicting the three patrons of Malta: St. Publius, Saint. Agates and Saint. Paul. An impressive stone arch bridge leads to the gate, guarded by stone lions.
The currently preserved gate was moved a few meters in relation to the medieval predecessor. The trail of the old gate is a fragment of the defensive wall on the right side of Mdina Gate, which stands out with a different building layout.
