Mainz is the capital of the federal state Rhineland-Palatinate and since Roman times one of the most significant centers in this part of Germany. Its most important monument is the Romanesque cathedral, and the city is also associated with the activities of Jan Gutenberg.
The history of Mainz dates back to the 1st century BC when a Celtic settlement was located here, followed by an important Roman military camp and castle. The remains of a Roman theater come from this period. Already in 343, the bishopric of Mainz was established, which is one of the oldest in Germany. The archbishops of this city in later centuries were included among the three most important representatives of the clergy in the country.
Mainz cathedral is the city's symbol and its most important monument. Built between the 11th and 13th century from red sandstone, it is one of the most important Roman monuments in Germany.
The Old Town of Mainz suffered a lot of damage during World War II, but was carefully rebuilt. There is no shortage of picturesque half-timbered houses, whose largest concentration is the Market Square, and historic churches, such as the church of St. Szczepana, church of St. Peter or the baroque-classicist church of St. Ignatius. An interesting addition to the building is the modern Fastnachts Fountain with over 200 figurines depicting residents during the carnival.
Mainz is strongly associated with the history of printing. It was here that the famous printing house of Jan Gutenberg was located, in which the Bible was printed. Today you can visit the Gutenberg Museum, which includes his printing machine. Other museums in the city include the Mainz National Museum, the Mainz Museum of Natural History, the Mainz Museum of History and the Diocesan Museum.
In the 17th century Mainz was established as a fortress. The baroque Mainz Citadel dominates over the city buildings. On its territory you can see a column from Roman times.
