FRANKFURT AM MAINGermany
Römerberg Square
Local name: Römerberg
Römerberg is a square with a complex of medieval Römer buildings, which from the 15th century served as the seat of the city administration of Frankfurt. It is the very center of the Old Town. The square also houses the Historical Museum, the Imperial Cathedral and the medieval Lutheran church of Alte Nikolaikirche. Every year there is a Christmas market here, it was also a traditional place of imperial coronations and markets.
The name of the square comes from its specific location. Römerberg was built on a hill in such a way that one part is higher and the other is lower (the word "berg" means "mountain" in German).
