The Museum of Art and History has its roots in the collection of paintings donated by Napoleon and Chaptal to the city of Mainz in 1803. The exhibitions are divided into sections: prehistory and Rome, antiquity, the collection of Prince Johann Georg, the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, paintings of the 19th and 20th centuries, graphics and Judaica.
