Established in the 18th century, the square was named after the Grand Duchess Louise of Hesse-Darmstadt. She was the wife of Ludwig I (1753-1830), whose monumental column is located in the center of the square. There is also a statue of Justus von Liebig - a world-famous chemist, called the "father of fertilizers", the inventor of the stock cube.
