Niederwald Monument

The monument commemorating the unification of Germany in 1871 is the work of Johannes Schilling. The prototype of the female figure at the top, the symbol of Germania, was Clary Schilling, the younger daughter of the sculptor. At the base of the monument unveiled in 1883 there is a relief depicting King William I surrounded by 130 dignitaries and soldiers.
