Görlitz is a border town, which in the past was one center with Zgorzelec on the Polish side. It belongs to those German cities that survived the war period almost without damage and have a well-preserved medieval spatial layout. The picturesque old town starred in many world film productions, including the Grand Budapest Hotel and Inglourious Basterds.
The beginnings of Görlitz are associated with the existence of a city of Sorbs in this place. The town received city rights at the beginning of the 13th century. The medieval history of the city was very turbulent due to its location on the Polish-Czech-German border and conducted during the war. The same location also helped in the development of the city, and especially his career as a shopping center.
The medieval layout of Görlitz has survived to this day. Above the picturesque tenements is the two-tower block of the Church of St. Piotr and Paweł. In the streets you can also find a small church of the Virgin Mary from the 14th century and the Holy Trinity Church decorated with polychromes.
The Upper Square is the central square of the city. The tenement houses around it have mostly medieval cellars, but the façades represent different periods and architectural styles. Many of them have nice carved and painted decorations. An interesting building is the Renaissance Beautiful Manor, in which the Silesian Museum in Görlitz has its headquarters. In turn, in the Lower Market stands the Gothic-Renaissance Old Town Hall.
City towers are characteristic for Görlitz. The most famous is the Fat Tower, which can be visited in the company of a guide. In the city you can also find two other towers, the Tower of St. Nicholas and the Reichenbacher Tower.
In Görlitz, you can also explore the industrial heritage of the region. A valuable technical monument is the 1452 Excavator Berzdorf excavator standing over 33 m high. There is also a Park Railway built in the East German times, which is a replica of the first German Adler 800 steam locomotive built in 1835.
