WOODSTOCK tourist attractions

+1 attraction

Woodstock is a historic city known primarily for the Blenheim Palace estate located on its outskirts, which is on the UNESCO list. The city center has preserved buildings from the 18th century and several interesting museums.

The history of the city dates back to the Norman times and the local church of St. Mary Magdalene. The Romanesque portal and early English Gothic windows have been preserved in its body. Around the church, on the banks of the Glyme River, there is a picturesque Old Town with buildings dating mainly from the 18th century.

Woodstock's biggest attraction is the Blenheim Palace. It is an 18th century late baroque residence owned by the Churchill family, the Dukes of Marlborough. The palace remains in the hands of the family and is open to visitors. In addition to the palace interiors, you can also visit the beautiful gardens that surround it. One of the most famous British prime ministers, Winston Churchill, was born in Blenheim, and his grave is in the nearby village of Bladon.

The city is also home to a small but interesting Oxfordshire County Museum with a rich collection on the history of the area, and the Military Museum that presents the fate of Oxfordshire soldiers fighting on the fronts of various wars.
