Oxford Castle
Oxford Castle is a powerful medieval Norman castle, currently partially in ruins. Most of the original motte-style wooden castle was replaced by stone in the 11th century. To modern times have survived, among others motte tower, tower of st. George and the crypt. Guided tours are organized in the castle, during which you can watch stage performances in costumes and scenes from the era. Part of the building has been adapted for the needs of the hotel.
Oxford Castle was built by the Norman baron Robert D'Oyly the Elder in 1071-73. In the fourteenth century, the military value of the castle decreased. During the civil war in the 17th century, most of the building was destroyed, and what remained intact was rebuilt for the needs of a local prison. They were closed only in 1996. Then a hotel was built here, and some of the former prison cells were transformed into guest rooms.
