Szczyrba is a commune near the Tatra Mountains, which also includes the towns of Strbske Pleso and Tatranská Szczyrba. It is a significant tourist center and a good starting point for hiking in the High Tatras.
The areas belonging to the Slovak Tatra National Park begin just beyond the borders of the villages included in the commune. From Szczyrbskie Lake and Tatranska Szczyrba, you can go to the routes leading to the area of Rysy, Krywan and Gerlach. A popular excursion destination is the Skok Waterfall in the Młynicka Valley. However, it should be remembered that in Slovakia you cannot climb most Tatra peaks by yourself, but you should use the care of guides. You can navigate through the valleys without any obstacles. It is also worth taking out insurance because help in the mountains is payable.
The most famous town within the commune is Strbske Pleso, with the Tatra pond of the same name. A walking trail leads around it, from which you can admire beautiful views of the Tatra Mountains. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the town has been developing as a holiday and winter sports center. There is the Strbske Pleso Ski Resort, as well as many hotels, guesthouses and apartments for rent.
