Spiš Castle is the largest castle in Slovakia. It is also among the largest in Europe. Since 1993, it has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is a vast stronghold, built of white stone and occupying the ridge of a hill towering over the town of Spiskie Podgrodzie.
Spiš Castle was built in the 11th century. At first it was a border watchtower, with time it became the seat of the Spiš region. Further zupani settled here by the king extended the stronghold standing on the travertine hill. In the eighteenth century, the castle began to fall into ruin. It is now open to the public and a small museum operates in several rooms.
Due to its location, the building with high, white walls looks extremely impressive. It consists of several parts, and from the upper castle you can admire the vast panorama of the entire area. The tourist route leads through subsequent courtyards and remains of castle buildings, including rooms, a chapel and utility rooms.
