The church James in Levoča is the largest Gothic church in Slovakia, as well as a national cultural monument. You can admire the extremely valuable works of the famous medieval sculptor Master Paweł from Levoča and the works of the baroque goldsmith Jan Szilassy. It is worth paying attention especially to the main altar, which is the highest (18.62 m) late-Gothic wooden cabinet altar in the world. The church also has valuable side altars - eight late Gothic, two Renaissance and three Baroque.
The Gothic church was built in the fourteenth century in the place where earlier stood an older temple. A Gothic chapel of St. George. In turn, the high church tower was built in the first half of the nineteenth century and to this day is the clearest element of the city's landscape.
The church bears the name of St. Jakub the Elder, Apostle - patron of military men, pilgrims and workers. His memory is celebrated on July 25. On this day in the past, big and famous fairs took place in Levoča.
