Orava Castle
Local name: Oravský hrad
Orava Castle stands on a high rock above the valley of the Orava river. Due to its location, it is one of the most picturesque strongholds in Europe. It is a Gothic defensive structure, with some Renaissance buildings. Inside you can admire the original furniture and equipment of the chambers, as well as the richly decorated castle church.
The beginnings of the Orava Castle date back to the 13th century. During its history it has been rebuilt many times, but has retained its Gothic shape. Built in such a way that it looks as if it were glued to a rock wall, it covers high walls with courtyards surrounded by Gothic and Renaissance buildings.
In addition to traditional sightseeing, there are also night tours at the Castle. During the season, many cultural events take place here. Falconers' shows are a big attraction here. Falconry from northern Slovakia is included in the UNESCO intangible heritage list.
