Tatra National Park
Local name: Tatranský národný park
The Tatra National Park in Slovakia includes part of the High Tatras with Gerlach and Krywan, the Western Tatras with Roháče and the entire Belian Tatras. It is the oldest national park in Slovakia. Especially valleys are available for tourists in its area. Ascent to high mountain peaks are very limited.
The park has been operating since 1949. In 1992, together with the Polish Tatra National Park, it was recognized as a UNESCO biosphere reserve. The area of the park is very varied. You can see here both huge general valleys and high mountain peaks already in the Alpine floor. The park has the highest peak of the Tatra Mountains, Gerlach and the symbol of Slovakia, Krivan.
The park has very strict regulations regarding the movement of tourists. Only a few peaks are available for popular tourism, including Krivan and Sławkowski Peak. You can get to Łomnica by cable car from Tatranska Lomnica. Access to other peaks is only possible in the company of an alpine guide.
