Sesimbra is a popular resort on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, and at the same time a picturesque historic town with preserved traditional buildings and a Moorish castle.

The town is situated in a bay with rocky cliffs. At their foot there is the most important attraction of Sesimbra, sandy beaches such as California Beach or Golden Beach, which are known not only to summer vacation enthusiasts, but also to surfers and people who like sea kayaking. There are several boat rentals near the beach. You can also take a trip along the beautiful coast.

The coast around Sesimbra is very varied. The rocky slopes of the mountains descend almost directly into the sea. The whole area is under the protection of the Arrábida Natural Park, which can be explored by numerous hiking, cycling and car routes.

Sesimbra was founded by the Romans, and in the early Middle Ages the area was conquered by the Moors. It was they who built the Castle of Sesimbra on the hill, whose walls and remains of buildings, including the Romanesque Church of St. Mary can be admired to this day. From the walls you have a great view of the city and the coast.

During the period of great geographical discoveries, Sesimbra was an important port. The Fortress Santiago Sesimbra was built to protect it. There are also several historic churches within the Old Town, including St. Mary's Church and the Archaeological Museum.
