The historic medieval castle is located on top of a hill. It is on the National Monuments List of Portugal. The remains of the castle are open to the public. You can see walls surrounded by dense vegetation, battlements, towers, a network of stone fortifications and a chapel. From the viewpoints located in the castle there is a wonderful view of the surrounding area.
The Moorish castle was built in the 8th century and then rebuilt in the 9th century. He served as a Muslim fort. In the 12th century it was captured by Christian forces during a reconquista on the Iberian Peninsula. In the 16th century the castle was rebuilt. In the following years, the buildings lost their importance and suffered greatly during the earthquakes in the 18th century. In the nineteenth century, the remains of the castle underwent modernization and improved technical condition.
