The statue of Luis de Camoes is located in the Chiado district of Lisbon. It was built in 1867 on Luís de Camões Square. It commemorates the figure of the outstanding Portuguese writer Luis de Camoes. The 6-meter figure is made of brass. It was set on a 7.5 meter marble pedestal. The writer is presented with a lowered sword in his hand and his greatest work titled "Os Lusiadas".
In addition, there are other characters deserved for Portugal on the coin. Their figures measure 2.5 meters and are made of limestone. They are: Jerónimo Corte-Real, Vasco Mouzinho de Quevedo, Fernão Lopes de Castanheda, João de Barros, Francisco de Sá de Meneses, Gomes Eanes de Azurara, Pedro Nunes and Fernão Lopes.
The author of the monument is Víctor Bastos. The construction of the monument began in 1860 and lasted 7 years.
