The Chiado National Museum of Contemporary Art presents painting, sculpture, photography and art installations created after 1850. His collection is constantly growing. Works of contemporary Portuguese artists come to her.
The museum was founded in 1911. It is located in the former Saint Francis Monastery in the Chiado district. In 1988, a great fire in the district survived, which destroyed nearly 20 buildings. It was thoroughly modernized in connection with Lisbon's function as the European Capital of Culture in 1994.
The main part of the exhibition focuses on Portuguese art from 1850-1950. There are also later works from other European countries. Among the most famous Portuguese artists presented at the Museum are Almad Negreiros a Amadeo de Souza - Cardoso, Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, Júlio Pomar, Fernando Lanhas, Fernando de Azevedo, Jorge Vieira, Mario Cesarina and Paul Rego.
