Money Museum

Local name: Museu do Dinheiro

The Money Museum is housed in a former Baroque church dedicated to Saint Julian in Lisbon. It is a modern, interactive institution that primarily focuses on multimedia solutions and exploring the world through experience.

Saint Julian's church was built in the mid-eighteenth century after a major earthquake that destroyed Lisbon. During archaeological works in 2010, the 13th century city walls were discovered here, which were to protect the capital from the river. They are currently exhibited in the museum.

The museum was opened in 2016, and a year later it won the title of the best Portuguese museum of 2017. Here you can learn about the history of money and other means of payment, trace how their appearance and shape changed. It showed the way from beads and barter to modern cashless payment methods. You can see a real gold bar, mint your own coin and print a banknote.
