The main pedestrian street of Lisbon and its commercial heart. It was marked out after the great earthquake of 1755 and there are mainly neoclassical and eclectic buildings with decorated facades, and its end is the monumental Arc de Triomphe. The promenade is tiled with basalt, marble and sandstone, which creates three-dimensional patterns. Today, Rua Augusta houses clothing boutiques, handicrafts stores and many restaurants and cafes.
