Figueira Square is located in the Old Town of Lisbon. It is an area that was completely rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. A monument to King Jan I was erected on the square in 1971. It was performed by Leopoldo de Almeida. It depicts a ruler sitting on a horse dressed in knightly armor. King Jan I is nicknamed Good or Great in Portugal. He contributed to the country's independence from the Kingdom of Castile. He is considered one of the most important figures in the local history. The monument shows the king as a warrior. On the stone pedestal were placed two medallions with the busts of Nuno Alvares Pereira and Joao das Regas.
