Niedzica is a town picturesquely situated at the foot of the Pieniny Spisz Mountains. There is a medieval castle on the shores of Lake Czorsztyn, and the proximity of the mountains and the lake provides many opportunities for active leisure.
From its medieval beginnings, Niedzica was a Hungarian village lying on the border with Poland. It was for this reason that a castle was built here that belonged in the past to many famous Hungarian noble families. Almost directly in front of it, on the other side of the border Dunajec, there was a Polish stronghold in Czorsztyn, which has survived to this day in a state of ruin.
Due to the fact that the Castle in Niedzica was inhabited until World War II, it has survived to this day in a very good condition. Currently, it is open to tourists, and in the rooms there are exhibitions presenting its history and relations with Hungary and Poland. An ethnographic exhibition has been organized in the Granary, which belongs to the farm buildings of the manor farm, and a collection of carriages and other horse-drawn vehicles can be seen in the coach house.
The greatest attractions of Niedzica include the Czorsztyn Dam, built in the second half of the 20th century, and the Czorsztyn Lake, created as a result of the partition of the Dunajec riverbed. Currently, the dam and its surroundings are treated as a promenade from which you can admire nice views of Spisz and the Tatra Mountains. It is also possible to visit the interior of the dam with a guide from the local hydroelectric power plant, and on the crown of the building there is a three-dimensional painting The Power of the Elements.
Niedzica is also a great starting point for exploring the Pieniny Mountains and other surrounding mountains. In the village itself, a trail starts along the scenic ridge of the Spiš Pieniny Mountains, while the villages of Czorsztyn and Sromowce are situated a short distance away, from where you can go to Trzy Korony. In Sromowce-Kąty, there is also the starting harbor of the famous rafting trip down the Dunajec Gorge.
