The dam at Czorsztyn Lake in Niedzica is the highest dam in Poland. Its height reaches as much as 56 m, and the length is 404 m. It was built in 1996 to increase flows in Vistula and Dunajec, produce energy and reduce flood risk in the area.
Although the outer appearance, ie the concrete crown, does not exactly indicate this, the water dam in Niedzica owes its tightness and durability to natural clays. The crown itself serves tourists as a pedestrian promenade and viewing point, which overlooks the scenic landscape of the surrounding lakes and the ascending Pieniny.
The dam construction was a huge undertaking. 1.7 million cubic meters of gravel has been used for this purpose! In order to make the most of the opportunities offered by this construction, two hydroelectric turbines are installed below the dam, generating energy from the flow of water.
