The ruins of the 14th-century Gothic castle are located on the hill by Lake Czorsztyn. Czorsztyn Castle is one of the many constructions of that type in Lesser Poland Voivodeship. The atmospheric ruins were secured in the 1950s and are available for sightseeing.
Czorsztyn Castle was built on the order of Casimir the Great for defensive purposes. The then castle was located on the important merchant and diplomatic route. The castle was sieged several times and because of that it had many owners and undergone numerous renovations. The current state of the castle was caused by the fire in 1795 and since that time no one has carried out a proper renovation.Archaeological excavations were carried out in the area of the castle for many years and resulted in a discovery of previously unknown parts of the stronghold such as the cylindrical tower, and household items such as wooden dishes.Czorsztyn Castle is in included in Pieniny National Park and is administered by the park's directorate. The characteristic only for the Pieniny plant species - Pieniny wallflower from the cabbage family - grows in the area of the castle.Less
