Heringsdorf is a summer resort located on the island of Usedom and forming together with the neighboring towns of Ahlbeck and Bansin a complex of "imperial bathing resorts", which were particularly popular at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Until the 19th century, Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf and Bansin were small fishing towns. However, along with the increase in the popularity of seaside trips, they turned into bustling resorts, to which the social cream of Berlin drew. The villages became known as "imperial bathing resorts" because subsequent German rulers rested here. In the nineteenth century, all three summer resorts gained picturesque, partly wooden buildings, which is characteristic only for Usedom.
Three piers were built then, of which only the Ahlbeck Pier survived unchanged. More than half a kilometer long, the Heringsdorf Pier was rebuilt in the second half of the 20th century. It is now among the longest on the Baltic.
The sandy Heringsdorf beach stretches along the entire length of the village. It is partly developed with beach baskets and umbrellas that can be rented. Part of the coast remains wild and you can sunbathe on your own. Along the beach there is a seaside promenade with numerous cafes, bars and shops. During the season, the Heringsdorf concert shell is the center of the cultural life of the village, where concerts and outdoor events take place.
