Český Krumlov belongs to the most beautiful Czech cities and is extremely popular among tourists. His advantage is first of all preserved intact Old Town with a huge castle towering over it, which was inscribed on the UNESCO list.
Český Krumlov is located on the Vltava River in the southern part of the country. It was founded in the second half of the 13th century, but the first castle was built over fifty years earlier. It was successively expanded until the 18th century and today it is the second largest castle after Prague Hrad in the Czech Republic. Around five courtyards there are over 40 residential and defensive buildings, in which you can admire, among others preserved wall decorations, a collection of antique furniture or one of the best preserved baroque court theaters in Europe.
Below the castle, on the Vltava River, there is the Old Town filled with buildings from the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque periods. The facades of many tenements wear painted or stucco decorations. Above the houses is the tower of the 15th century Gothic church of St. Wit. On the large, rectangular market square you can see the Renaissance town hall building, which today houses the Torture Museum, and next to it stands a beautifully decorated Baroque Marian column. A walk through the streets of Český Krumlov is a real journey into the past and, in addition, the possibility of following the footsteps of the characters from the movie Illusionist, for which photos were shot here.
