Graphite Mine

Local name: Grafitový důl

Český Krumlov has been a mining town since the Middle Ages. In the 18th century graphite was added to the silver and gold mined here. The mine operated until 2003. Currently, its sidewalks with mining equipment from different periods are made available to tourists.

Organized graphite mining in Český Krumlov began in 1767. At the end of the 20th century, the deposits were depleted and further operation of the mine was impossible. Already in 1994 the first tourist entries to the plant began. Over time, the miners working here became employees of serving tourists and maintaining corridors in good condition.

Visiting the graphite mine takes place with a guide and lasts about an hour and a half. Visitors descend to the sidewalks dressed in mining overalls, in helmets and with flashlights. The initial phase of sightseeing is a journey by underground train. The rest of the corridors should be taken on foot. There are numerous mining machines for the extraction and transport of graphite.
