The Republic of Cyprus is a state occupying the southern part of the island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean. Its capital is Nicosia, and the country itself belongs to the European Union. It is one of the popular summer vacation destinations, with beautiful beaches, 330 sunny days a year, and wonderful monuments, mainly from the ancient and medieval times.
Cyprus was already well known in ancient times, and the Greeks recognized that it was here that the goddess Aphrodite was born. For this reason, to this day, this place is called the Island of Love. However, traces of Cyprus's residence are earlier and come from the Stone Age. You can see the reconstructed neolithic village of Chirokitiaz with round houses and cobbled streets. The most important ancient archaeological site is Paphos, inscribed on the UNESCO list, and near Limassol you can see the ruins of Mycenae Kurion.
Today, the basis of tourism in the Republic of Cyprus is primarily rest at the seaside. Thanks to the mild climate, the sun shining almost all year round and beautiful beaches, tourists are happy to come here both in summer and winter. The island offers them both well-developed resorts with developed infrastructure, such as Limassol, Paphos and Amathus, as well as wild, natural beaches away from civilization.
The country also boasts beautiful, natural landscapes. The Akamas Peninsula with cliffs, dunes and volcanic rocks and the famous Avakas Canyon is considered to be the most beautiful place for those who value contact with nature. The interior of the island is mountainous, with peaks reaching almost 2,000 m above sea level. There are vineyards in which sweet Commandaria wine is produced, as well as picturesque mountain villages lying terraced on the slopes.
