Byzantine Museum
Local name: Βυζαντινό Μουσείο
The Byzantine Museum of Nicosia has the largest collection of Byzantine art in Cyprus. The main part of his collection is a collection of 230 icons, the oldest of which were created in the 9th century, and the latest in the 19th century. In addition, the exhibition includes interesting examples of Byzantine applied and sacred art as well as books and manuscripts.
The icon exhibition allows you to trace the development in this field of art over the centuries. Particularly noteworthy are the icons from the 12th century - a period that is considered the "golden age" in iconography.
An interesting and one of the most important exhibits at the Byzantine Museum are mosaics from the church in Kanakaria. They were built in the sixth century and remained in very good condition until the second half of the twentieth century, when they were dismantled and taken abroad. Eventually, the Cypriot authorities managed to recover the mosaics, but they were not restored to the church, but it was decided to display them in a museum in Nicosia.
