Karlovac is a city that is known primarily for the production of the most famous Croatian beer Karlovačko. You can also see the remains of a 16th-century starry fortress and a medieval castle.
The city was founded in 1579 by the Austrian Emperor Karl Habsburg and received its name from him. Due to the Turkish threat, it was planned as a star-shaped fortress with regular, divided into quarters buildings. Only the remains of the moat have survived to this day, and a large part of the oldest buildings were destroyed during the war in Yugoslavia in the early 1990s.
In the old town centered around Bana Jelačić Square there are decorated with baroque frescoes, the Church of the Holy Trinity, the Franciscan monastery and the city museum located in one of the oldest preserved tenements. The museum has exhibitions depicting the history of the city and the life of the local population.
Outside the center is the most important monument of Karlovac, the medieval castle of Dubovac. Today it is adapted to the organization of exhibitions and cultural events, and in the future it will also be a lodging facility.
Karlovac is a city that suffered greatly during the civil war in the Balkans. This event is associated with the museum-military museum located in the neighboring town of Turanj.
Thanks to its location on four rivers, the Korana, Kupa, Mrežnica and Dobra, Karlovac is a good place for active tourism. Rafting and kayaking trips are organized on Mrežnica and Dobra, and the Foginovo bathing beach operates almost on the Korana almost in the city center. An attraction for residents and tourists is the beer festival held in early autumn.
