The Croatian Museum of the War of Independence is quite unusual, mainly because it was created on the battlefield, the site of one of the toughest fights. In the open, you can see tanks, howitzers, anti-aircraft guns and gunboats, and even an armored personnel carrier. Most of the exhibits are authentic weapons from the War of Independence in 1991-1995. On the territory of the atypical museum there is also a monument built for 239 killed soldiers of the "fortified bridge" Turanj.
This area is very important for Karlovec. In addition to fighting, negotiations were taking place regarding a ceasefire, exchange of prisoners of war, and the reception of refugees and displaced persons. For the inhabitants of Karlovec, Turanj is a symbol of victory and the birth of a new life. In the former military barracks, you can view for free testimonies of atrocities of the past, which can become a warning for future generations.
