Frankopan Castle
Local name: Frankopanski Grad
The Frankopan hail of Novigrad na Dobri, i.e. Novgorod on the Dobra River, is a 14th-century castle built by the Croatian family of the Duchess of Frankopan. The castle remained in private hands until the beginning of the 20th century. During World War II, the building was severely damaged and was not renovated later. In recent years, the roofs of the towers have been reconstructed and a viewing platform has been created from which you can see the ruins and the panorama of the river.
The last owner of the Frankopan dynasty castle was Fran Krsto (1643-1671), who was executed after an unsuccessful plot against the Habsburgs. After his death, the castle was looted by Austrian general Herbstein, who sold it to the knights of the Order of St. John (Joannites). From 1746 to the beginning of the 20th century, the castle was ruled by the Croatian noble family Patačić.
The testimony of the former splendor of the building is a partially preserved stone arch bridge on the Dobra River, through which travelers passed, heading to the stronghold located on a high hill. The fragment of the bridge that has survived to this day is over 120 m long.
