Stari grad Dubovac is a magnificent castle from the 13th century, built in the Gothic style and then rebuilt in the Renaissance. It is currently available to visitors. In one of the towers there is an exhibition dedicated to the history of this part of Croatia, while the castle walls are a sensational viewpoint.
The castle plan is irregular. The castle is reinforced with turrets. The highest square tower towers over the other round towers. Between them there are wings with defensive, storage and living rooms. There used to be a hotel in the castle.
The castle was probably the work of Bela IV, Hungarian king, who ruled over the region from 1235. He was to guard the border with Turkey, and in later years also an important trade route leading to Hungary. During its long history, the castle was also used as a granary and a prison.
