Liptovský Mikuláš lies in a basin surrounded by the Western Tatras, Low Tatras and Choč Mountains. It is a popular tourist destination due to the largest water park in Slovakia, closeness of hiking trails, Deminowska Valley with numerous caves, artificial reservoir Liptovska Mara, and in winter well-groomed ski slopes.
The city's history dates back to the Middle Ages, when Liptovsky Mikulas was an important shopping center with the privilege of organizing fairs. The early Gothic church of St. standing at the main square of the city has been preserved from this period. Mikołaj and the neighboring Curia Pongracowska.
In the center of Mikulasz you can also see numerous historic tenement houses, some of which have richly decorated facades, a neo-Gothic Evangelical church and a Classicist-Art Nouveau synagogue.
What attracts the largest number of tourists to Liptovsky Mikulas is the Tatralandia aquapark built on the basis of warm sources. It is located in the suburbs, near the Liptovska Mara reservoir and allows you to enjoy swimming pools and water attractions all year round with wonderful views of the Tatra Mountains.
Liptovský Mikuláš is also a great base for those wishing to hike in the Low and West Tatras. The proximity of the Demänovská Valley, which is one of the most visited places in the Slovak mountains, means that tourists come here in summer and winter. In the summer to visit the caves with a rich stalactite, and in the winter to use the ski resorts on the slopes of Chopok.
