Liptovský Mikuláš lies in a basin surrounded by the Western Tatras, Low Tatras and Choč Mountains. It is a popular tourist destination due to the largest water park in Slovakia, closeness of hiking trails, Deminowska Valley with numerous caves, artificial reservoir Liptovska Mara, and in winter well-groomed ski slopes.

The city's history dates back to the Middle Ages, when Liptovsky Mikulas was an important shopping center with the privilege of organizing fairs. Liptovský Mikuláš is also a great base for those wishing to hike in the Low and West Tatras. The proximity of the Demänovská Valley, which is one of the most visited places in the Slovak mountains, means that tourists come here in summer and winter. In the summer to visit the caves with a rich stalactite, and in the winter to use the ski resorts on the slopes of Chopok.
