Este is a small, historic town that was formerly owned by the d'Este family. It is a famous center for the production of ceramics, and local products can be bought in numerous workshops.
The city has a history of settlement lasting continuously over 3 thousand. years, from prehistoric times. There are two archaeological sites on its site, a prehistoric burial ground and remains of Roman houses, and an archaeological museum with a historic trail leading visitors through the most important sites related to the history of Este.
The city center has nice, historic buildings in the Venetian spirit. Around the main square there are Renaissance and Baroque tenement houses with arcades, with cafes and restaurants. A bit further, in the streets you can see the stately palaces that used to belong to the aristocracy and the richest merchants.
The greatest attraction and monument of Este is the 14th century Carrarese Castle surrounded by high defensive walls with 12 towers. Inside the walls there is now a picturesque city park with a rose garden, pergolas and terraced beds.
