The 14th-century castle was built on the order of Marquis Niccolò II d'Este, who ruled Ferrara, after the revolt of residents from 1385. After the owners left the building, the works of art gathered there were plundered. The current equipment comes mainly from the nineteenth century. Interesting to visitors are the secret chambers of Alfonso I d'Este (1576-1534).
