The abbey was founded in the 12th century as a hospice for pilgrims on their way to Rome. From the 15th to the 17th century it was inhabited by the Camaldolese monks. After the property was sold in 1690, the entire complex remained abandoned until the mid-20th century. Since the 1990s, a group of volunteers has been working on the renovation of the monastery. A small ethnographic museum was built within the architectural complex.
