Rosenheim is a historic city that was an important commercial center in the past. It is known primarily for its museums, including the modern Lokschuppen exhibition center located in former railway buildings.
The origins of the city date back to the Roman times, when there was a settlement here founded around 10 BC. In its present shape, it has existed since the beginning of the 13th century. Due to its location on the River Inn, halfway between Munich and Vienna, it quickly developed into a significant commercial center. The golden age ended after the Thirty Years' War, which brought changes to political and economic systems throughout Europe.
Despite the air raids in 1944, the buildings in the oldest part of Rosenheim are in very good condition. You can see here, among others St. Nicholas, the Loreto Chapel, the only surviving Mittertor city gate, which led to the castle square and many tenement houses clustered around city squares.
The museums here are a big attraction in Rosenheim. The most famous of them is Lokschuppen Rosenheim, located in the 19th century railway works. Every year, it presents exhibitions in the field of history, nature and culture. Interesting exhibitions on hydrology and water engineering are at the Inn Museum, while the Wood Technology Museum presents the traditions of forest work and wood processing in Bavaria.
The city also has large green areas located, among others on the River Inn. The main city park is the historic Rieder Garden.
