Prachatice is a small, historic town in the Šumava National Park. They can boast one of the best preserved tenement house complexes decorated with sgraffito decorations in the Czech Republic.
The city began to develop in the 11th century thanks to the monopoly on the salt trade. The trade Golden Route leading to Bavaria ran through here, and numerous trade privileges made Prachatice rich quickly and obtained the status of a royal city. To this day, memories of these traditions are held every year on the Great Market Square of the Salt Road Celebrations.
Among the most important attractions of the city are its monuments, including the late Gothic Church of St. Jakub the Greater and the Town Hall. Many originally Gothic tenement houses, rebuilt in the Renaissance period, with sgraffito decorations on their facades, have also survived. People interested in the history of the city can visit the Prachatic Museum with exhibitions depicting the life of the inhabitants during the heyday of the salt trade.
The Libin mountain, almost 1,100 m above sea level, rises above the town. There is an observation tower at its top, from which you can see the Alps in good weather.
