Town hall
Local name: Městský Úřad
New Town Hall in Prachatice built at the beginning of the 20th century. It is a neo-Renaissance building with a clock tower. Its facade is decorated with intricate sgraffito decoration and sculptures. They refer to various professions that were performed by the townspeople.
The town hall was built in 1903 according to the design of the Viennese architect Anton Schurd. It refers to the appearance of the Old Town Hall Prachatic built in the 16th century, as well as to German Renaissance buildings.
A three-story building with a clock tower is crowned with a hip roof with a small lantern. The ground floor is made of dark stone. The two upper floors and the tower are covered with sgraffito decorations. They imitate the arrangement of stones on the facade and present floral motifs. Between them were placed figures and scenes related to the social life of the city. On the tower there is a picture of King Wenceslaus IV who gave messengers a document with the town's privilege of location. On the facade you can see symbolic representations of various human activities: obstetrician (scientist), blacksmith (craft), priest (clergyman), woman (justice), soldier (army), peasant (agriculture) and sculptor (art). There is also a scene here showing the passage of the merchant caravan along the Golden Trail as an indication of where the city derived its wealth.
