The city was established after World War II by joining several nearby villages and was named after Wela Peewej, a local fighter of communist partisan units. Her monument can be seen in the center of the village.

The Kleptuza Park, in which one of the strongest in this part of Europe, a karst spring has a unique beauty. There are numerous walking paths and picnic areas. Pasture Rocks are also a well-known destination.

In the village itself, a lot of traditional buildings with red-tiled roofs have been preserved. There is also the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the history of the area can be found in the Museum of the History of Velingrad.
