The national park covers the area of the Rila mountain range at an altitude of 800 to 2925 m above sea level. There are over 100 peaks over 2000 m above sea level, including the highest peak in the Balkans, Musala. There are also 120 lakes and the source of the longest river in the country, Marica. Here you can find fancy rock formations, cliffs, gorges, caves and waterfalls.
It is the largest of the three national parks in Bulgaria and the largest protected area. Four nature reserves have been created within it, all of them have been included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. There are over 1,400 species of plants, 48 species of mammals, 99 species of birds and 20 species of reptiles and amphibians in the park. You can meet here, among others chamois, bears, wolves, deer, eagles and capercaillies.
Numerous hiking trails have been marked out in the park, including the European long-distance E4 hiking trail. There are also many tourist and ski resorts.
