Dzhumai Mosque

Local name: Джумая джамия

The historic mosque is one of the oldest and largest examples of Ottoman architecture in the Balkan Peninsula. It is 40 m long and 30 m wide. Unlike later mosques with one dome, the temple is topped with as many as nine domes, supported by four pillars.

The mosque was built in the second half of the 14th century on the site of an Orthodox church. After several decades, during the reign of Sultan Murad II, the temple was demolished and replaced with a building that can be seen here today. Inside there are, among others, valuable paintings from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries

Initially, the haram, or prayer room, was accessed through two entrances. At the end of the 18th century, a third entrance was built during restoration work. Currently, only the doors on the north side are used. The entrance from the east is walled up, and from the west it is permanently closed.
