Seven Lakes Natural Reserve
Local name: Природен резерват "Седем езера"
The group of seven picturesque glacial lakes lies in the Rila mountain range, at an altitude of 2,100 to 2,500 m above sea level. Some of them are connected by small streams. You can get to the lakes by cable car. There are two hiking trails leading from its station, which take about 3-4 hours.
Each lake is named after its most characteristic feature. Salzata, or Teardrop, has unusually clear water. Babreka (Kidney) and Okoto (Eye) refer to the shapes of the reservoirs. Okoto is 37.5 meters deep and is also the deepest glacier circus in Bulgaria. The shallowest and at the same time the most stocked reservoir is Ribnoto Ezero (Fish Lake).
According to legend, a pair of giants used to live in the valley. They lived a peaceful life full of love. Their happiness was not liked by everyone, and one day the couple were attacked. When the young giant died defending his beloved, the woman cried until seven lakes were formed from her tears.
