TREBINJE tourist attractions

Trebinje lies on the edge of Popovego Polja, a vast mid-mountain karst basin in the south of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is a former commercial city, with a preserved stone bridge and a charming old town surrounded by defensive walls.

The city was founded in Roman times and already in the 4th century Christianity arrived here. A reminder of this is the Tvrdoš Monastery on the banks of the Trebišnjica River, which according to tradition was founded by Constantine the Great. The current buildings of the monastery come from 1928 and stand on the site of earlier buildings destroyed by the Turks.

Trebinje offers tourists primarily a charming old town surrounded by stone walls. There are a lot of traditional Balkan houses with the upper floors up ahead. Many of them now have restaurants and cafes. The walls are surrounded by vines for which the Trebinja area is famous. Within the old town there is also a bazaar with local products, including excellent cheeses.

In the past, Trebinje was an important stop on the trade route from Dubrovnik to Istanbul. A reminder of those times is a stone, multi-span bridge across the Trebišnjica River, located today outside the city center. In addition, the churches here are noteworthy, including a copy of the Koscian church Gracanica with beautiful polychromes.
